Baby massage - Why and How to do it ?

Are you a new mother still basking in the most life-changing experience? Holding your newborn can be a soothing, emotionally full-filling moment and this is the time to nurture a deeper bond for promoting a happier and healthier journey for your little one.

Doctors strongly recommend mothers to develop a skin-to-skin connection with the baby from the very moment of  birth and there are various ways to do it – massaging being one of them.

Ask your mother or grandmother, they will vouch for its benefits and would happily share tons of tips! Gliding your fingers gently on the baby while rubbing oils or moisturizers offers unbelievable health benefits for your newborn and quite a bit of relaxation to you too!

Why Massage Is Important:

Massage has numerous advantages for newborns, including helping them learn to relax and be at peace.

  • It boosts the immune system.
  • It encourages conversation and bonding.
  • It enables babies to have a positive attitude towards their bodies.
  • It reduces the release of stress hormones
  • It encourages deeper and more peaceful sleep.
  • It aids in the proper functioning of the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems.
  • It relieves gas and colic pain, as well as congestion and teething.

Not only for babies but massaging also helps the new parents in a lot of ways. Some of them are:

  • It enhances communication between parents and children.
  • It enables the parent to recognize and respond to their baby's nonverbal signs.
  • It increases parent’s ability to help the child relax in times of stress.
  • It is fun and relaxing for parents to massage their children.
  • It fosters sentiments of competence and self-assurance.
  • Mom's struggling with postpartum depression sometimes has shown improvement after starting infant massage.

How to Massage:

Place your baby on your legs or a soft pad as you sit in a comfortable position.

Very gently rub into your baby's skin with natural oils or  light moisturizers in a rotating motion all over the baby's body.

Don't come in contact with eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals.

Best Massaging Oil:

  • Handmade virgin coconut oil is the best choice for massaging babies in India since ancient times. It was made in small batches at home from fresh coconut milk in south India, especially in Kerala. It was infact a tradition to make this at home when a newborn baby was born. Though people used castor oil and sesame oil for massages, the most widely used oils were coconut and coconut milk oils.
  • Coconut oil massage gives the muscles and bones that extra strength and flexibility.
  • Coconut milk oil results in a super soft, glowy baby's skin.
  • Both the oils deeply hydrates and nourishes the baby's skin.
  • Regulates baby's body temperature.
  • Gentle massaging with coconut milk oil soothes and relaxes the baby's body improving sleep and reducing fuzziness.
